word of God Catholic SCHOOL |

Grades 5 - 8
Dear Parents and Guardians,
At a time that is economically trying, Word of God Catholic School continues to offer students an art program which helps prepare them for the 21st century. I feel thankful that both Sr. Mary Victor and Father Frank have been so supportive of our arts program.
This program is developing competencies in 4 basic learning domains:
Cognitive Skills
critical thinking skills….problem posing and solving….analysis….evaluation and decision-making….
Creative Skills
Problems can have multiple solutions. The arts enable students to envision alternative possibilities; inspiring innovation.
Craftsmanship Skills
Workmanship requires a personal commitment to excellence. (Fine workmanship has been the key to Japan’s economic successes).
Pedagogical Skills
The arts connect all forms of knowing; promoting achievement across disciplines. Individually, math, science, history and language arts convey only part of the world’s reality. The arts serve as ways we communicate and record our impressions. No one of these disciplines offer a full picture. All are necessary for a comprehensive, holistic education.
The arts provide the opportunity to be aware of God’s creation and to respond creatively to His goodness.
In our visual arts program, the students are using design elements and principles to develop and express their ideas visually. They are developing manipulative skills, learning an art vocabulary, and being exposed to varied cultural and historical styles. They are exploring different techniques and processes in the areas of graphic design, drawing, painting, sculpture, textile design, printing, etc. They are developing the skills needed to analyze and evaluate their works and to make aesthetic choices.
