First Grade

Like small plants, first graders grow and mature as they begin their journey through elementary school at Word of God. Intellectual growth blossoms as children are exposed to phonetic skills, spelling, and language mechanics. These skills make them better readers with good vocabularies and excellent comprehension. Children are encouraged to use these skills to write and illustrate their own stories.
Computation, making and identifying patterns, telling time, money sense, measurement, and solid geometry are all part of the math curriculum . These provide a foundation for higher math procedures and an entrance to making sense of the adult world.
Spiritual growth is nourished as first graders learn about prayer, the Mass and the life of Jesus.
Computers, music, gym and art programs allow the children to explore other facets of their development.
Word of God School is a wonderful place to grow!

Second Grade

Second grade at Word of God is a year of growth, both academically and spiritually. Our Language Arts curriculum emphasizes phonetic skills, comprehension skills, grammar ,writing and spelling. The students become independent and fluent readers. They progress from writing simple sentences to writing stories. In math, students are introduced to telling time, counting money, graphing, word problems, adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers, along with practicing our basic facts and calendar skills daily. In science and social studies we cover a wide variety of subjects, including weather, mapping skills, the ocean, and the rainforest. Using our "Scholastic News" helps to keep us up-to-date on a variety of other topics relating to our world. We also have an introductory Spanish program in which the children learn basic vocabulary and some phrases. One of the greatly anticipated classes is handwriting because the children learn how to write in cursive. Most importantly, this is the year in which the students celebrate their First Reconciliation and their First Holy Communion. These sacraments are an important step in the faith formation for our students. Along with daily prayers, the children are instructed in all of the aspects of our Catholic faith with time set aside for monthly Masses and special activities such as making chalices in art and learning new songs for church in music. Helping them grow in their faith and in their academic studies are their eighth grade buddies with whom they share many activities. Second grade at Word of God is an exciting year, and one you don't want to miss!

Third Grade

The goals of third grade are to become comfortable writing in cursive, to learn the multiplication and division facts, to extend reading skills to the content areas using textbooks and to practice organizational skills to prepare for the move to fourth grade. Once the students have these basis skills mastered, they will be better prepared for the responsibilities of a fourth grader.

On Halloween Day the First Grade celebrated in a more traditional way by dressing up as Saints for an All Hallow's Eve Liturgy.  Each child was aided by their Seventh Grade Buddy who spoke about the little one's patron saint.

November 4th was also a very special day for First Graders as the Phipps Garden Center sent two lovely ladies to talk to the children about "tops and bottoms".  The children learned about edible plants and which part we eat.  The children snacked on pineapple and ginger snaps. The children also learned about planting seeds.  Their bean plants are already sprouting!!!

Third  Grade News

Students in third grade and eighth grade, in cooperation with the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, made placemats to be used for a Veterans Day lunch at the Veterans Administration Hospital.  Each placemat had a special message thanking a veteran for all he or she has done for our country and for us as individuals.
