word of God KINDERGARTEN |
Kindergarten

Kindergarten children come to school with a sense of wonder and a desire to learn. The Word of God kindergarten program carefully nourishes these qualities in a safe atmosphere designed to foster and promote our students’ cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual growth. Each child is encouraged to develop a positive self image and an appreciation of the personal worth of every individual. In a loving environment of security and trust, the child is introduced to the goodness of God as shown in the gifts of creation, family, self and God's greatest gift - Jesus Christ.
Philosophy
We, at Word of God Catholic School, believe that education begins within the family as parents are the primary educators, planting the seeds of Christian values and love in their special child. We can only hope to enhance and strengthen this beginning and to invite parents to aid us in continuing the education of their child.
Curriculum
Communication skills are fostered, as each child is encouraged to express their ideas verbally and in picture or written form. Story telling, poetry and dramatic play encourage each child to stretch his or her imagination and to share his/her thoughts with the whole group.
The reading readiness curriculum urges each child to embrace reading by providing a strong foundation in specific skill areas such as story recall and sequencing, following directions, perceiving rhyming words, letter recognition, sound-letter association, sight word recognition, left to right, top to bottom progression and learning to appreciate books through hearing stories read aloud.
Math readiness is acquired by each child through many hands-on activities, games and the use of manipulatives. Children are taught number recognition, counting skills, time and sequencing as well as patterns, geometric shapes and addition/subtraction readiness.
Social studies is an important part of the Kindergarten program as each child learns to modify his/her behavior to a large group (taking turns, sharing and leadership). The children also learn about community helpers, fire prevention and safety.
Our science activities allow the child to experience the world through his/her senses and to observe and discover mysteries about plants, animals weather and seasons.
Art activities channel the child’s creative energies through painting, drawing, sewing and clay activities. Music is provided both in the kindergarten classroom and in an upper school music class that fosters rhythm, movement and song. Physical education is provided twice a week in the gym.
The Kindergarten classroom features the use of a Smart Board and computer classes are conducted once a week.
